sarahrocks.jpgTake Joan Jett and Betty Page, throw them in a paper bag together and that’s pretty much what you’ll get from Sarah Rocks!

She knows how to rock the mic and guitar in a totally interstellar way that will knock your socks off!

“I’ll give girls a reason to play air-guitar in their bedrooms hidden from disapproving eyes–I’ll give them something they can call their own.” -Sarah Rocks!

You’re a muso-girl, describe your sound…

Hmm, 56% Grrrl-Anger 23% Punk Rock 21% Sarah Rocks! Ha ha. It’s a sound all of it’s own really. It alternates between happiness and anger. Not usually sad though… I hate sad Music.

Do you play any instruments? How long did they take to learn?
Yeah! I’ve been playing guitar for maybe 5 years now. And I have the ability to play bass I just don’t do it lol. I’m still learning really. Every musician always has new things to learn. I also at one point played clarinet… but that was a long time ago. I was really bad at it.. lol.

When did you first know you were going to be a muso-girl?
Birth. Hah! Since I was old enough to listen and comprehend music i’ve had a passionate love for it. When I was little I used to carry around a big bulky cassette radio with a tiny built in Mic. I’d get up before anyone else to sing and listen to my fave songs. Lol, I still do this! I guess it’s been hard-wired into my brain for a long time. I realized how I wanted to go about it when I was 13 and got my first guitar for my birthday.

Who inspires your sound?
The Runaways, how I love those born-to-be-bad girls! Justin Timberlake.. lol, I have a sickening thing for him which fuels some radical loving emotion! An up and down relationship I have with this weird boy lol. He keeps my hormones on their toes! And of course my friends, family and the environment around me. Theres alaways something going on to be written about.

What do you think of the music scene right now?
Well, I think pop music is evolving into a very cool lounge-hip-hop based sound. Rock music? I think it’s been plunging into the ground since the death of Kurt Cobain. I don’t like rock music today. It all sounds alike to me. I don’t listen to the radio at all. The airwaves never seem to have space for anything real. You could easily layer Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, The Academy Is.., Cobra Starship, Thursday etc. etc .over one another and play them all at once, and have a wonderful crap orchestra.

Their music is all the same. Same ideas. Same lyrics. Same overly exagerated song titles. Same stuff different band. It’s boring and very very over done! The bands out now that I do love and respect are Kittie, Sixx A.M., Coldplay, Halifax, Lost Prophets, Die Trying Sin City Angels, The Muffs, Green Day and of course, not so new but making new music, Motley Crue.

What do you love most about making music?
That what I create is my own. That it can say the things i’ve wanted to say but just can’t because I’d get in trouble with those that it’s about lol!

You have some kick-ass tunes on your Myspace - do you write and produce them all on your own - tell us all about it…
Oh yes! And thank you! =] Haha, I do produce everything and write it all. Everything you hear is all from me. I’d make a big deal if someone helped with anything though.. i’d worship them in some way. Lol. Quality is never its best. Everything is very raw. Most recordings are done in a tiny corner in my garage or in my bedroom on my bed. Lol I don’t have the best work conditions but, hey, it works right?

Do you play gigs - what’s it like performing your tracks live?
I’ve performed only twice actually lol. Both times were at parties. I perform for my friends quite often though. They’re wonderful people lol.. they love hearing my new stuff which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Performing is fun but quite nerve-wracking. My first time I was very nervous. You think of all that can go wrong at first.. But once you get into it and start feeling comfortable it’s fun. The best part is hearing the crowd clap and yell. I live for that! haha.

What or who makes you jump in the air happy?
The “What” that makes me overly excited is when I achieve a milestone in my music career. Like, the last milestone I crossed was Sunday before New Years. I had my song Premeired on Radiate FM in Miami, FL. I’m still fluttering about that! Lol, when I feel one step closer to the bright lights is when I feel my best. Now, as for the who… Justin Timberlake. Lol! I have the worst crush on him! It’s disgusting! People don’t believe me when I tell them that either. They think i’m all about the rock.. Which I am but i’ve always had a place in my heart for JT. Lol… I’m so lame! haha

What would a Sarah soundtrack sound like?
Very Raw. Fun and angsty. Angry and hormonal. Lol. Ummm, very truthful.. honest vibes.. Thats what my music conveys.

Quick fire round - what’s your favourite:

Band: I have three that I can never choose between Kittie, The Runaways & Led Zeppelin.
Place: New York City! Los Angeles! Miami! I love love love big cities!

What advice would you give would-be muso-girls, Sarah?
Oh my, never stop. If you can feel it in your heart and breathe it when you wake up then never ever stop. It’s a long road but everything is possible. If you put all your love and hope into it, you will get where you want to be. Always think for yourself. Let you do the talking. Don’t change anything to be more like someone or something else. Its always worth it to shine your true colors and be yourself. Never stop trying.

The colour pink, discuss.
Ahh, that wonderous color!! The defining color for grrrls everywhere! By far the most classic color next to white… I like it best on handbags or sunglasses.. Haha!
