Pink Ladies, I have got the BEST interview EVER!
You know zines rock my world, right?
I LOVE creatin’ mine online and I LOVE reading them, especially the hand made, retro-girl print ones.
Most importantly, you know how much I HEART Sugar Paper Zine, don’t you?
Well, imagine how coolio-a-go-go my day just got, because I hooked up with the editrix-in-chief craft-girls, Super Seleena and Kickin’ Kandy, who make it all happen!
And because they’re like the gift that just keeps givin’, they’ve come to play in our world o’ pink armed with everything a Pink Lady will ever need to know about zines and zine makin’ - SPZ, we love you!
Who are the girls behind Sugarpaper zine? Introduce yourself ladies!
Hello, we are Seleena and Kandy and we love craft!
We LOVE SPZ, but for those who don’t know what it is, tell us what Sugarpaper zine is exactly…
It’s a handmade magazine full of crafty things to do.
How did you find out about zines and why are they cooler than glossy mags?
Kandy: I bought my first zine from a stall at a gig…it was pink!
Seleena: I had alot of pen pals and they sent me flyers for peoples zines. I started off reading zines that people wrote about their favourite bands then went onto reading lots of grrrl friendly zines.
We think they are WAY cooler than glossy mags because they are made by people for the love of making it, not because they are trying to sell you things. When you read a zine you can see the love and hard work that has gone into it.
What made you set up a zine about craftin’?
Kandy: I always wanted to make a zine and i know about and love crafts so thought i could write about it..I had never made one before so roped Seleena into the project because i knew she had years of zine and craft love and zine making experience under her belt!
We also thought that people might like to do some crafts.
Is it hard to actually make a zine - how have you made it happen?
OMG, it’s so easy to make a zine. A zine could be as simple as some scribbling on a pice of A4 that you have photocopied, folded up and given to your friends…it’s that easy! All you need is paper, scissors, glue, some ideas and access to a photocopier! That’s all we used to make it happen.
What do you love about zines and zine makin’?
We love the way that all zines look different and that they can be about anything. We also love that they are so easy and fun to make. When making sugar paper we enjoyed typing on an old typewriter, finding fun backgrounds and making a big mess sticking it all together!
How do you decide what to put in it?
Well…in this issue we decided to put 20 things to make and do. We had to think of things that we like doing that other people may enjoy and we tried to keep the projects varied. Look out for our seasonal (halloween, bonfire, chrimbo) special coming soon!
Have you got any favourite zines you read and would recommend?
We love colouring outside the lines, it is a hefty zine with well-written interviews with talented and inspiring female artists!
We also like Reasess your weapons, this is a zine put together by a collective in leeds called manifesta. It is jam packed with articles and interviews rants and doodles.
Do you have any advice for would-be zinesters?
Go for it! Don’t be scared. Don’t worry about your writing/drawing skills. If you’ve got something to say write it down, making zines is a fun thing to do, even if you only make 2, one for you and one for yr best friend you should still be proud that you made a zine, yeah!
The colour pink. Discuss.
Kandy: I love pink so much my hair is pink and my life’s ambition is to have a pink car!
Seleena: Pink is great, it goes really nice with blue!
Quick fire!
