Elke, who are you lady of ah-doreability, and what is it you do?
I am a photography makeup artist in Los Angeles and New York. I work for magazines, advertising, runway and celebrity clients. I specialize in beauty and high fashion.
What does being a kick-ass make-up artist actually involve?
Patience! And talent. You really have to know your technique and have a sharp eye for detail.
What made you wanna be a make-up artist?
I’ve always loved beauty and makeup.
My mom was a photographer and I think I caught her eye for detail, and I was always pouring over her Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar magazines when I was little, just fascinated with the models. photography and makeup.
I started doing my friends makeup for the prom, dances and such and when I was high school I went to beauty school. Been doing it ever since.
What do you love about make-up?
The idea of perfect beauty.
Perfection.
Just creating the most perfect version of that person in front of me. I’m all about perfect skin, lips, eyes…. I’m more about the technique and the final look than the products. I always say, give me any product and I can make it look good. It’s not always the product that you have, it’s how you use it.
Top Elke tips for looking Beauty*Licious this summer…
It’s all about looking glowing and bronzed this summer. Mix matte and shimmering bronzes together to create a contoured face with bronzer. And both matte and glossy lips are in (though Matte is all the rage on the runways.
Get lashes looking perfect with one coat each of two different mascara. Like one lengthing and one thickening. Put on one coat each for the most perfect lashes.
You know those cute little Kabuki brushes that you see with mineral makeup?
Those are great blending tools. Once you’re done with your makeup, just take the kabuki brush and buff and blend your skin. Your face will look flawless and perfectly blended.
Have a hot humid day ahead of you? Try my oily skin trick. Apply your liquid or cream products like foundation and concealer, and then blot with a kleenex. Then powder. You’ll find that your ‘face’ will last hours longer!

I have thought about Elke’s comment all day regarding technique over product. I think we constantly look for better products when we should be refining our technique. Thanks for posting a great piece of advice.
