Look what we’ve found!
If, like the Pink Ladies and I, you love fashion and beauty and you love, love, love glossy magazines - check out our new favourite online mag - Amour!
Amour is a free monthly online alternative to the glossy mags such as Vogue and Elle and is the brainchild of the super-lovely student-girl, miss Laura!
Describe the girl behind Amour, Laura, in 5 words…
Fun, hard-working, ambitious, chatty, flirty.
Amour is totes one of our new favourite mags - tell us all about it?
AMOUR is basically a free alternative to all your monthly glossies (e.g Elle, Vogue). The name ‘AMOUR’ is love in French. I wanted a name that reflected the magazine, and I thought ‘love’ was that perfect word.
We’re green with envy, we wanna magazine! What made you set it up, how has it gone from an idea in your head to a real online feast for the eyes?
I love fashion magazines! I get every single one! But they are soo expensive, and I wanted a free version, and when I couldn’t find one, I created one! It went from a idea in my head reealllyy fast. In about a month it went from being a simple plan to a real online magazine. It was just crazy!
Why a fashion mag?
I LOVE fashion! So do most females. That’s why I focused the magazine on fashion, rather than anything else.
When did you know you were able to create a killer mag that girls will love?
I didn’t! I thought it would totally fail, but then I got all these e-mails saying what a good job I’d done! Although, thinking abut it, I did create magazine covers when I was younger out of cut up bits of newspapers, and teen weeklies.
How do you decide what goes in the mag?
Whatever’s happening in the world at the moment. For example, London Fashion Week has just gone by so that’s what will be going in April’s issue. I do also get submissions of work and I pick whatever I feel appropriate, which is mostly all of it!
What’s the secret to your success?
I don’t know!! I guess because I’m motivated and focused 24/7 on the magazine!
Do you have to do be businessy and how do you handle that?
I like to think I am, yes. But sometimes when I’m in an awkward situation, I find it a bit hard to put my foot down. I always think though, that it’s MY business, and no-one can do anything about that. If they are being difficult, then it’s their problem not mine! I handle everything businessy like I think an editor of Vogue would think. Sometimes this doesn’t always work out though!!
What’s a typical day in the life of Laura, ed-girl…
Well, I usually wake up at 6:30am, when I check my e-mails for about 15 minutes, then I get clean and dressed, etc.
I go to work until about 4pm, when I return home and read all my mail.
The rest of the evening I spend making new pages for the magazine, building networks on myspace, etc. and answering e-mails. I break off for something to eat, but usually it’s straight 4pm-11pm!
Then I have my beauty sleep!
What’s been the best experience since setting up?
All the e-mails I get from girls telling me they love the magazine! It really keeps me motivated!
What’s your favourite brand and why?
I love love love Primark and New Look. They are so cheap and chick. Each season’s trend generally only lasts for 3-4 months, and after that it’s over. So why splash out on something that you can only wear for a short while? Primark and New Look offer cheap affordable clothes that you don’t feel guilty about buying! Perfect!
What would an Amour soundtrack sound like?
Fast, and up-beat, but also slow at the start. Running the mag is pretty hectic!
Do you have a style bible yourself – a magazine, book that you completely dig?
Vogue/Elle, totally! But sometimes they do go a bit OTT with wacky trends and designs. It’s like, would anyone actually wear this?
What’s next in Laura’s world?
The next issue – that’s what I’m focusing on. And also gaining more press and building up the amount of people who know about AMOUR!
What advice would you have for would-be journo girls – any words of wisdom would be fabulous-o lovely lady!
Just go for it! What’s the worst that can happen? Submit your work to as many places as possible (including AMOUR!) and see how it goes. You’ve got nothing to lose, as people can only say no!
