Meet Pink Lady, Staciee.
She’s a soon-to-be journo-girl, she writes super cool blog entries ’bout Staciee world, style and music over at her myspace.
She’s written this too-cool-for-school feature ’bout Girly Rap Revolution.
Staciee you rule. Fact.
I’m not even going to pretend I know anything about rap’s history. However, when you think rap, you don’t immediately think of young white girls rapping about blokes, getting drunk, geeks, trainers, clothes among many subjects.
Yet, this is the next big thing and an occurance that will become more and more familiar if this brewing talent has anything to do with it. It’s about time girls spoke out and delivered their thoughts and feelings on the world, and if they can do it in a fun witty way, it’s all the more appealing. It’s no longer about how well a girl can sing, that’s been done over and over. The new girl icon, is the girl who can rap.
So who is part of this revolution? The most well known would be Lady Soveriegn, it would be easy to throw Lady Soveriegn off as a novelty act but she is anything but, listen hard and you hear real talent in her lyrics. Yeah, she might not tackle some of the most controversial topics in her lyrics, but who wants to hear about that? This girl raps about everyday things that appeal to the listener, she doesn’t take herself seriously and can poke fun at herself. She has an abilty to rhyme smoothly and crack a smile.
Is it any wonder she got signed to big American label, Deaf Jam?
Next big thing is Uffie. The Miami born girl who lives in Paris and was inspired by it’s rappers and Parasian electro beats. Her lyrics are fun yet smart and her gentle voice backed by amazing electro, makes it impossible to not dance along. Ready to Uff is provocative, sexy and a girl anthem. It’s not about sex, it’s about going out with the girls and knowing the boys want it. Pop The Glock, is an amazing electro disco song, brimming with gentle attitude.
Upcoming talents to be looked out for include: Goldielocks who hails from Croydon, is taking the myspace genereation by storm, touring constantly around London and entertaining the masses with her clever catchy beats. This girl knows how to entertain her fans and her lyrics are pure genius. You’ll learn the choruses instantly and be in awe of her clever lyrics. This girl has so many clever tunes up her sleeve.
From there on, there are so many other girls that spawn on from these, Lelespeaks, The sick kids and Miss OddKid. MySpace is just brimming with them.
Girlie rap is great for the girls who always wanted to sing but couldn’t.
Those who can’t sing, rhyme.
This parade of new talent, nestled away in the darket corners of Myspace will soon explode and inspire girls everywhere. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t a natural rapper, it’s practise and experimenting with lyrics that get you there. Like any muscian, it needs work.
